Some accounts link it to the Eden Gardens park named after Emily and Fanny Eden, sisters of Lord Auckland, while popular culture suggests zamindar Babu Rajchandra Das gifted his Marh Bagan to Lord Auckland and Emily Eden as thanks for saving his daughter's life. The area was originally called 'Auckland Circus,' and the name 'Eden Gardens' was given in 1841 after the Eden sisters. The cricket grounds were constructed between Babughat and Fort William, situated in the B. B. D. Bagh area near the Calcutta High Court. It earned its title as the sport's spiritual home.
