The Empire's origins lie in the gradual erosion of galactic institutions during the Clone Wars. Palpatine, secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, falsely accused the Jedi of attempting to overthrow the Republic, framing them for treason. He manipulated the Galactic Senate into using clone troopers to purge the Jedi, then reorganized the Republic into a dictatorship promising stability. The Senate was largely intimidated or manipulated, and many senators opposed the Empire. While Palpatine kept mostly to the shadows, Grand Moff Tarkin and other officials maintained a more public presence as the personification of Imperial power, with Darth Vader serving as a feared enforcer rather than the primary public face. The construction of the Death Star allowed Palpatine to dissolve the Imperial Senate and transfer authority to Praetor-officers called Imperial Moffs, such as Grand Moff Tarkin. By Episode IV, revolutionary insurgents had organized the Rebel Alliance to overthrow this totalitarian regime.

The Empire's rise was not a sudden coup but the culmination of centuries of Sith planning. In Episode I, Palpatine convinced Queen Padmé Amidala to vote no confidence in Chancellor Finis Valorum, securing his own election as Supreme Chancellor. During the Clone Wars, he used emergency powers to create a massive clone army, conscript Jedi officers, and nationalize financial sectors. By Episode III, he had overstayed term limits, exploited public fear, and orchestrated his own kidnapping to spread terror on Coruscant. Over 2,000 pro-democracy senators suspected he would not return power, setting the stage for the Rebellion. The Empire's visual identity drew from historical fascism: stormtrooper titles echoed the Sturmabteilung, uniforms reflected Nazi Germany and 19th-century Polish ulans, and TIE Fighter formations mirrored Soviet military parades.
